It´s common knowledge that many of us in the United States are, at the same time, overweight and lacking in the nutrients found in a healthy diet. Some folks gain a lot of weight by frequent visits to the fast food joints just because it´s easy and they don´t have any cleanup or they´re just short on time. With a little bit of planning you can make balanced, nutritious and healthy dinner recipes ready to serve in only 20 to 30 minutes from the time you start cooking. It´s a win-win-win deal—you´ll enjoy better health, save money and maybe lose a few unwanted pounds.
Start by scheduling a half hour each week to peruse your pantry and decide what you want to eat next week. Plan your dinner menus, making sure to utilize foods from the “food pyramid” of healthy food categories.
This is mostly common sense, as opposed to, a strict exercise in the principles of nutrition. We should all know by know that we need fruits, vegetables, lean protein, dairy and whole grains included in our daily diet. Easier than you think. Everyone has their favorite foods in each group, so just choose the ones that you enjoy.
One dish dinners, like crock pot meals, casseroles and pasta or rice mixed with veggies and some meat or tofu are easy to implement healthy dinner recipes. Committing a few hours on the weekend to preparing ingredients for the coming week lets you assemble attractive healthy dinners on the fly and in a jiffy. Here´s one way:
1. Cook up a big pot of rice on the weekend (or whenever you have time) for use during the week. Separate the cooked rice into three, four or more containers equal to one meal, for you or your household. Freeze the rice for later reheating in the microwave.
2. Wash and chop fresh vegetables (or use frozen) for “instant” use with the rice and step 3.
3. Prepare chicken or sausage, divide into two or three portions and store in fridge for quick inclusion in your healthy dinner recipe.
Some more ideas include, slow cookers make it easy to produce healthy dinner recipes with very little effort. Just toss vegetables, meat and broth into the crock pot in the morning and return home to mouth watering aromas and a ready to serve dinner. Just add a whole wheat roll. Soups recipes, made in quantity, can provide dinner for days to come. Make a batch of hearty and healthy gumbo and freeze in single or family portions, ready to heat up and eat in minutes.
As you can see, there are a variety of dishes you can have on hand without even having to drive to the takeout place. Healthy dinner recipes are easy if you use your imagination. Best of all, you´ll increase your intake of vitamins and minerals, lower intake of saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol, and save money—all in one fell swoop!
